Life is a fantasy of which we each are our own author. Have you developed the plot you want? Have you created characters that you might need to kill off in a future chapter? Where is your story at and what needs to happen next?
I have been an author but the book I wrote is about finances, financial planning and how to build and protect wealth. It was fun to write but it is not nearly as interesting as the story of my life. But what makes a good story? Am I am creating everything I need in my own story? Here is a list of things to help us write our own story and bring our fantasy to life, I call it the recipe for the right story.
The right story always touches people in a real and meaningful way. As the main character we need to genuinely interact with the other characters in our life. It is not easy to be genuine. It is much easier to be superficial. Genuineness means that sometimes we need to say difficult things to people we love. Sometimes we need to tell the whole truth when a little white lie would have worked and been easier. But we are the hero of our own story and everyone knows the hero always does the “right” thing not the easy thing. Be genuine.
The right story has meaning, it is substantial and it is something that the reader (or observer) wants to delve into. We will benefit from a more substantial and meaningful life. Choosing employment and/or volunteering in work that contributes to the world and to success of others beyond ourselves is a good way to create a meaningful life. Painting, poetry and performing or other artistic and creative pursuits are another way to create meaning in our lives. Be substantial.
The right story has passion and I am not talking about those tawdry novels which were authored to be titillating on the night-stand before closing our eyes at night. I am talking about real passion for living and expressing. Whether it is a passion for creating, doing, having or being it is the energy of creation at work when we express and share our passions, both with ourselves and with others. Passion is a dish best served to others not eaten alone. Be passionate.
The right story is shared with others. We are proud of it. We enjoy sharing it and we are interested in others sharing theirs with us. The best way to be heard is in fact to listen. We always attract to ourselves whatever we put out to others. It is a universal law of attraction. Like begets like. If we lie we will create liars in our lives. If we are wise we will create more sage advice.
And so, to coin a phrase, the moral of our story is: pay attention to the genuine, substantial, passionate stories of others and your right story shall not just unfold it shall also be told.
